White Galloway Show & Sale Castle Douglas 2017

High quality, well produced White Galloways were forward at the annual October show and sale in Castle Douglas. Real positive showcase for the breed. Top and record price ever for a White Galloway Bull was Lot 110, Barlaes Snowman, from Robert J McTurk, Dalry, Castle Douglas. This very well grown young bull, of good White character will add new genetics to buyer Tim Oliver's Melkridge Herd of White Galloways. Tim Oliver, Northumberland, is the past chairman of the Belted Galloway society which also registers White Galloways. Tim breeds Belties, Shorthorns and has the largest herd of White Galloways in the UK. A very impressive sight!

Barlaes Snowman sold for 2800gns and is a 20-month-old son by the 10,500gns black Galloway, Barack Obama of Fingland, and out of Barlaes Ice Maiden, by New Era of Gall-Way.

In the bulls only two were entered with KM Welters, Kernal Rigg Farm Carlisle winning this class with the well grown and very well marked, beautifully presented White Galloway, Heritage Desider by Lessnessock Mariner. Second place went to R J McTurk with the top priced bull Barlaes Snowman.

The next top price in the White Galloway section was the Overall White Galloway Champion lot number 104, Melkridge Risa 2nd from Tim Oliver. This tremendous type in-calf heifer was sold to Paul Thompson, Co Durham for 2400gns for his Wolsingham herd. Tim Oliver, also took second place with another stylish heifer Melkridge Fortune, selling for 1600gns. Third prize went to another real quality heifer Highcreoch Claire 3rd, from well known local breeders Messrs Gilligan. She was sold for 1400gns to Jonathan Wright, Girvan to join his White Galloway herd. Messrs Traffords from Cumbria sold some good White Galloway cows by Miefield Morris with calves at foot by Irelandton White Knight.

The numbers forward were small but made up for by the quality forward, the 7 females averaged at £1,575.
