2015 Sale Reports
Once again the Belted Galloway Society’s annual spring sale held at Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway mart was a great success. Now in its third year the entries for this fixture had doubled on the numbers for the first sale, but trade was still brisk, with quality stock meeting strong demand from prospective buyers from as far afield as Devon.
WORCHESTER 23rd MAY 2015
The Society was pleased to renew its association with McCartneys for its spring sale at Worcester market on 23rd May after a break of two years. A good entry of all classes of stock was forward, although a few more buyers would have helped the trade a little.
CASTLE DOUGLAS 23rd OCTOBER 2015
This year’s show was presided over by Council member Mr. Robert Adam, of the Bigginvale herd in Derbyshire. Quality was very high and it was pleasing to see such a well-turned out display of cattle.
2014 Sale Reports
Show: Judging the show this year was Jim Ross of Romesbeoch, Dumfries, and with a total of four Belted heifer classes and two large bull classes as well as a class of White Galloways it proved a busy morning.
Sale: As with previous years a large gathering had assembled at the ringside, and the sale proved an interesting mix of extremely brisk bidding in some cases, with others noticeably slow. The overall clearance rate was 83%.
CARLISLE SALE - 17TH MAY 2014
The Society’s second annual spring sale at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Saturday, 17th May met with a very encouraging trade. Entries were up considerably from 22 in 2103 to 48 pedigree Belties and registered White Galloways this year, and the clearance rate was a very healthy 100%. The pre-sale show was judged by Scott MacKinnon, who chose Joe and Zan Kirk’s first calver Huntfield Pearl as Champion. Reserve went to Anne Bell’s young bull Clifton Ambassador, which also topped the sale at 3,800 guineas. Average prices were comparable with 2013, except for the cows which sold better than last year.
SEDGEMOOR SALE - 14 JUNE 2014
Following the cancellation of the Society’s sale at Bristol an alternative venue has been arranged by courtesy of Messrs. Greenslade, Taylor Hunt at their Sedegemoor premises on 14th June. The Belted Galloways will be sold as part of the regular suckler cow sale and will include two cows with calves at foot; five in calf or bulling heifers; four young bulls and three appendix females. WORCHASTER 25TH MAY 2013
A record entry of 71 lots for the Society's regular fixture at Worcester presented buyers with a wide choice of pedigree stock. On the day 12 lots were not forward and of those offered for sale 52 were sold, giving a respectable clearance rate of 88%.
CARLISLE 18TH MAY 2013
The Society's first spring sale to be held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle saw a good selection of breeding stock presented to buyers from as far afield as East Anglia.
The pre-sale show was ably judged by Roger Robson of the Castlefield herd, and in the female class he chose Carolyn Fletcher's in calf heifer Barwise Magic Mischief as the Female Champion. This Barwise Jigsaw daughter was bred out of homebred cow Barwise Mike's Magic and went on to top the sale at 2,800 guineas. Second placed heifer was Robin Murray's two year old Solway Tant, a homebred heifer sired by Park Apollo.
