Mosston Muir Primrose Highland Show Champion 2012

Once again the Society mounted its popular stand overlooking the cattle judging rings and, despite the inclement weather, the event proved well-attended and the stand was busy with friends and members from all over the world as well as enquiries from new breeders.

The judging was to have been carried out by Douglas Crighton of the well-known Broadmeadows herd, however Douglas was unfortunately recuperating from an operation and was unable to attend. George Wilson of Reddings, Moffat stepped in and brought his considerable experience to bear. The whole of the judging was conducted in a deluge of rain, and everyone was full of admiration for the exhibitors as well as the stewards and judge, for putting on such a good display of quality cattle.

Following on from her success at last year's show Jannifer Taylor won the first class for junior heifers with her Tobergill Odette. Next up were the senior heifers, and Anne Bell picked up the prize here with her homebred heifer Clifton Honey. Completing the female classes was Tom Rennie, who collected the first prize for his four year old cow Mosston Muir Primrose.

Tom continued his winning streak by picking up the rosette in the junior bull calss with Mosston Muir Paddy. Only two bulls were out in the senior class, and Anne Bell won here with Cairnsmore Domino, an excellent bull bred by Bill and Jane Landers.

The Special Prizes were dominated by Tom Rennie, who won best cow, best female, best animal bred by exhibitor and finally the overall champion with Mosston Muir Primrose. This was closely followed by Mosston Muir Paddy who lifted the best junior bull, best bull, best junior animal, breeder of best bull, best animal of opposite sex to champion and overall reserve champion. To clinch the whole proceedings Primrose and Paddy went on to win the Special Prize for the best pair.

A drookit but delighted Tom was over the moon, and his deserved victory can only bode well for his herd dispersal, which is to take place at the Society's show and sale at Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas on Friday 26th October.

Once again, the Society is grateful to the Storrie family for their support in providing us with such excellent facilities on the stand. Surrrounded as we were by a sea of mud the Sibcas cabin ensured that Beltie breeders kept drier than most!
