Dessy Henry

I farm in North Antrim right on the edge of the glens of Antrim in the townland of Gruige. Henry’s have been farming here for over two hundred years and I am the 8th generation. I bought my first two belted galloway females in 2009 from Richard Creith, Ballylough herd and my first bull from Des Dunne, Castlemartin herd. Since then I have continued to grow the herd and purchased females from various well known breeders in Scotland and Ireland I currently have 15 pedigree cows with another 4 heifers calving in the spring, the plan is to keep between 20 and 25 pedigree cows.

I was the inaugural Chairman of the Belted Galloway Club of Ireland which was formed in 2012 to promote the breed and provide social occasions where breeder could meet and exchange ideas. The club has been a huge success and it has also helped in getting showing classes in 6 agriculture shows in Ireland both North and South. It has been at these shows that many of the breeders here including myself have shown for the first time and has helped in getting the breed out into the farming community’s eyes which has led to a higher profile of the breed in Ireland.

My first time showing at the annual show and sale in Castle Douglas was 2013 which does take a lot of effort and expense when you live in Ireland but this paid off in 2015 when I won Champion female with Gruige Eva.

I am looking forward to my time on council and doing my bit to help promote the breed nationally.
