2009 Young Stock Person Competitions

The summer of 2009 saw the introduction of new young handler classes at 3 Scottish shows. The idea for these classes came after a bequest to the Belted Galloway Society from a late member who indicated they wished the money to benefit/encourage young members of the society. The aim was to encourage youngsters to show Belted Galloways but the classes were to be judged on their cattle handling ability not on the quality of cattle they showed.  The shows involved were Ayr County Show, Straiton Show and Stranraer Show. The classes were for youngsters between 12 and 21 years old.  Rosettes were also given to youngsters showing Belties at Wigtown and Stewartry shows in the general Beef Young Handler classes.

It was very encouraging to see that the classes had between 3 and 6 entries forward and hopefully we will build on this in the future. Everyone did really well, despite some ring nerves. We would like to thank the judges involved for their advice and encouragement.  Exhibitors included Cameron Rodgers, Judith Cowie, Bobby Landers, Katie Landers, Sain Milvern, Clair Mowbray, Rebecca Murdoch and Claire Taylor. We would like to thank them all and hope to see the eligible ones at the next season shows.
